A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
